uk techno veteran broom is one of the most consistent producers in the game and on neon, he delivers four killer dance floor tracks. inspired in equal parts by the swirling, dub techno of chain reaction and the insistent, loopy techno of mid to late-90s jeff mills, the release starts with the steel-plate percussion and churning chord builds of -m19-. broom keeps his focus on that approach for -energy-, where doubled-up claps and clanging chords create an eerie but urgent sensibility, while the title track is a slightly less visceral affair thanks to the inclusion of a sleepy vocal sample amid the churning keys. finally, -involver- sees broom focus his energies elsewhere, its acidic, grimy groove coming across like steve bicknell in a bad mood.

the force known as 33.10.3402 has built a cult following in certain circles through the years with his adventerous production approach and execution. with numerous releases on labels such as esp institute, kunstkopf, and most recently second circle we now see his appearence for the first time on l.i.e.s. 33.10.3402 perfectly balances his sound and presentation with this three track effort where we hear tones and rhythms that can go from baleric to metal beat in the blink of an eye. with looming clouds clearing for the light of day and then back again, these tracks sonically play with the emotions and serve equally as dancefloor cuts or for home listening bugout sessions.

ashworth concentrates on the essence of solid techno in his first full ep for made of concrete. inspired by the main component of concrete itself, the material is intitled ‘portland’ and consists of no less than four original tracks. “world” makes for a gentle introduction by opening with a soft melodic lead, swiftly changing the tempo after a few measures. we’re quickly immersed in a syncopated bassline peppered with whirring synths that harmonise with full scale piano cuts, the most intriguing earworm on the entire cut. on “launch” the producer lays down hard hitting techno drums from the get-go, setting the foundation for a tense atmosphere. ashworth’s signature move quickly ensues, as he manages to inject emotion through synths and piano pads into an otherwise tense and anxiety-ridden ambiance. toning down the graveness of the previous tracks’ mood, ”mineral” reveals a surrendering groove, with a stripped down, minimalist approach, where the melody is assembled with the help of industrial elements, emotive bleeps and electric glitches. ashworth’s experimental edge is evident in the final track “scatter” - the sub bass lead creates a morose atmosphere paired with low-key synths and mechanical loops. while the first two tracks showcase ashworth’s ability to instill life into solemn techno soundscapes, the second half of the ep successfully exhibits his edgy experimental side, adding up to a heterogenous release.

oliver schories is neither a friend of dogmas nor an antagonist of reflection. he winks affectionately to his musical past with his fourth album, to at the same time bethink himself of his musical core. accordingly profound and day-dreamfully rests relatively definitely in itself, without having any demand to be danceable. schories has allowed to let himself go and to listen into himself. in twelve tracks he tells about his experiences and allows a very deep view. who listens to music with the heart will understand what his ensouled basslines and oceans of melodies are telling. he came down to rest solid as a rock and knows where he belongs to. and apparently he feels relatively well over there. how sweet, that he lets us listen so closely.

new release on eye teeth by israel vines featuring the hybrid techno bass electro anthem “gatekeepers”, the dark techno gem “unscathed” and the ambient “repose in dub”. we started this sublabel as way of exploring pure and experimental techno in an entirely contemporary context (where it often uses historical lenses and a wider musical context). this is techno from detroit and america, not detroit techno. we would like to see american techno evolve, and this new imprint is an attempt to be a catalyst in that arena. this ep was pre-mastered by neel at enisslab studio in rome. the vinyl was mastered by carl at trutone and pressed at archer records in detroit.

amir alexander makes his triumphant return to argot with an exceptional and enigmatic new record, the butterfly. since providing the label’s inaugural release in 2012 with his gutter flex ep, alexander’s music has graced the catalogues of respected labels like secretsundaze, finale sessions, and hype_ltd, and expanded his vanguard sounds and anunnaki cartel imprints. the butterfly finds alexander picking up the conversation where gutter flex left off, but now he s speaking it in a new language.

begr-001 by basement grey records is a 3 track 12- ep produced by teersom including a reinterpretation of b1 - waves e by felix k. the ep includes minimalistic and experimental soundscaping through the record made for dark dancefloors. the label and the record keeps an eye on the atmosphere where people enjoy dancing eyes wide shut.

benedikt frey crafts a musical aesthetic that (much like the esp institute) might only be seen in its true form from a birds-eye view—a whole greater than the sum of its parts. his playful indifference to genre specifics and pre-prescribed instrumentation or production techniques makes for a loose and refreshing collection of work, and this debut for the esp institute, the lobbyist, serves up an incongruous three tracks so bewildering and narcotic we’re already impatiently fiending for more. on side a, the title track is no less than a medieval assault. led by a stomping war drum and a blasting bass synth that might literally have caught the studio on fire, an erratic array of clanking percussion, hi-hats and cymbals push us into a sinister corner where his whispering chant grants us the smallest bit of humanity before continuing with the beating. on side b, cupids delight (ft tcb) and gravel both explore variations on beauty—the former in a blur of ghost-like vocals smeared in harmony across a low-slung machine drums, and the latter evoking a tropical affair gone psychedelic, complete with drawn-out disorienting marimba and ritual clave/tom arrangements. welcome home brother benedikt, what took you so long?

altered moods recordings makes its first artist foray into asia, more specifically, it sets its sights on nagano, japan, where it finds a fertile and quickly expanding underground scene and one of its key players, yoshiki tsuchiya, also known as miruga. miruga has made a big splash in his relatively short arc as an underground artist. he came out strong in 2012 with human tube on anton zaps bellwether ethereal sound label after a full-length digital album on logos recordings two years prior.

berlin experimental techno duo these hidden hands recently teamed up with lucrecia dalt for a 12&#8243,, on hidden hundred, these moments dismantled. the abstract sonic terrain plotted in the eponymous first track finds its logical conclusion on the b-side, where tension and release oscillate in a harrowing groove. the artwork, created by jesse draxler, adds another layer of apocalypticism to the package. ian blevins is the keeper of the jewel in the crown. this is his second offering for the esp institute. picking up right where we left off, side a unleashes another explosive big room belter with resume a driving rhythmic monster that takes advantage of the whips and cracks in ian’s drum machine arsenal, while warm chords lay a foundation for a quirky lead melody and rubbery pulse to dance upon. akin to hannibal, blevins esp institute debut in 2015, the arrangement here toys with us before revealing the true guts of the track—this time characterized halfway through by a punctuating gangster piano hook. on side b, poor old head utilizes ian’s signature drum styling we’ve come to adore, but here he establishes swells of melancholy via bending notes that meow and purr, beautifully ebbing and flowing though an array of incongruous dial tones and bells—shakey and barely out of sync, yet cradling a loosely drawn chord progression. these two songs will smack you up before they rub you down.

* this is the seventh surgeon album.
* -while exploring new production techniques using old and unlikely hardware, the results were so unusual that i really had the sense that these pieces of equipment didn t actually create these sounds, rather they were in fact some kind of elaborate reception device that allowed me to tune into transmissions from distant galaxies. the music i could hear was actually the received transmissions of pop hits from those distant galaxies that were being played on their radio stations. i quickly recorded all that i could before losing the transmission.
* i consulted with dr andrew read, the astrophysicist with whom i recorded guitar treatments in 1999. he has worked on the discovery of the most distant galaxies and astronomical objects in the universe. together we came up with a possible list of where these musical transmissions may have come from.

ubuntu means *i am because we are*. ubuntu rec is the brain child of federico grazzini, an interactive open space where to share music and any form of art, with friends like-minded and whoever is interested in this modern laboratory. first vinyl is a collection of secret weapon played during the season, raw tracks produced by the newcomer e-dward!, double dash and federico himself.

ipanema, the neighborhood where bossa nova was born, is known as one of the most famous beaches in rio de janeiro, the host city of the 2016 olympic games. it s streets are aligned as a grid, the same way we do in electronic music. on sundays, the roadway closest to the beach is closed to the motor vehicles, allowing the tanned bodies ridin through it and inspiring this track. additional remix from german duo piemont completes the release.

this is a city of contradicting systems and clashing elements. its morphology becomes a direct representation of a poly-rhythmic frenzy, avoiding any attempt of crystallization into a single entity. hi hats become columns, snares turn into repeating arcades and drum kicks form encompassing volumes. this is the architecture of the absurd, where reality as a single vision is no longer possible. as music helps us escape our bound dimension through obsessive repetitions, this city wants to be a materialization of this transcendental power.

new york s gunnar haslam appears on l.i.e.s. with his third lp for the label titled lebesgue measures. picking up where he left off on his last long player mirrors and copulation we hear an evolution in his sound throughout the nine songs. still there are the understated yet grooving acid lines next to carefully programmed drums and attention to surrounding detail which creates beautiful and balanced atmospheres. there is a brightness coupled with an underlying sullenness tapping into some sort of mystical and seemingly obscured narrative which moves through the entire record. deep and immersive stuff to say the least.
